What is Tithe?

The idea of Tithe came as a result of asking friends the following question - do you give to charity? And if not, why not?

Overwhelmingly, the answer was ‘yes, but only when my friend is running a marathon’, or variations on that. The reason people weren’t giving regularly was either:

  • They didn’t want to commit to just one cause

  • They didn’t have time to look for charities

  • They didn’t know what charities they would even consider

The issue wasn’t the desire but the ease of donation. Tithe is a way to try and make that process easier. By giving us a regular donation that’s as easy as just a few clicks, we’ll distribute your money (along with the other donations) between different charities on a monthly basis. You can read more about how we choose these charities in the next section. Each month, you’ll also receive a newsletter explaining our choice and informing you where your money is going.

Why the name? Tithing is a Christian/Jewish concept of giving a portion of your income to a church or charity every month. It was more common in the past but now feels like a less well-known practise. We’d love to bring it back, with or without the religious angle.

How do we choose charities?

Our selection of charities is guided by a number of core principles which we use to evaluate and prioritise our chosen causes. These are summarised as follows:

  1. Transparency of impact. We focus our efforts on charities which make a high impact-per-dollar and provide transparency about the way they allocate their resources. Simply put, if we don't know what a charity is doing with your money, we won't give to it.

  2. No charity is too big or small. If everyone only gave to the charities that they saw on tv, smaller, local community charities wouldn't receive the funding that they so need.

  3. Diversity of causes. As above, there are so many different issues that need highlighting and so many charities that address these issues. We want to try and keep our charitable selections as diverse as possible whilst maintaining the impact-per-dollar mindset. The benefit of an organisation like Tithe is that you can diversify your 'charitable portfolio' without effort.

  4. Topical. Charitable needs evolve over time and place, and our selected causes will do so too. We don't believe that any one charitable cause is inherently better than another. Our mission is to choose the right charity, in the right place, at the right time.
