Surfers Against Sewage
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are a leading ocean and marine conservation organisation in the UK who operate under four pillars:
1. Campaigning for better water quality in UK oceans, lakes, and rivers.
2. Campaigning to lessen plastic pollution in our oceans.
3. Campaigning for conservation status for more of the ocean.
4. Campaigning to stop ocean warming.
They're very highly regarded in this space and their campaigns have led to actual change in government policy regarding marine conservation.
For example, SAS played a critical role in raising awareness about the impact of plastic pollution. Their campaigns contributed to the UK government’s decision to ban certain single-use plastics, such as plastic straws, stirrers, and cotton buds.
Through their advocacy, SAS has also supported the expansion and better management of Marine Protected Areas around the UK. Their efforts have led to increased protection for marine ecosystems from harmful activities.
Perhaps most importantly, SAS has highlighted issues related to sewage and agricultural runoff, pressing for compliance with the EU Water Framework Directive. This has led to tighter regulations and measures to reduce pollutants entering water bodies.
As we reach the pinnacle of the British summer, it feels fitting to give to a charity who a play a vital role in helping us enjoy that summer more. Pollution in our waterways is a severe issue and SAS have proven to be effective in pushing back against it, which I'm very happy to support.
We gave £350 to them in August, and you can find out more about them here: https://www.sas.org.uk/
