Malaria Consortium
Why Malaria Consortium?
A key inspiration behind Tithe's giving is an organisation called GiveWell. They're a US-based nonprofit that acts a little like Charity Navigator (or CharityClarity in the UK). They review the actions of charities and try to ascertain which are the most effective (typically by impact-per-dollar-spent). Unlike Charity Navigator or CharityClarity, who attempt to score every charity in the UK or US, GiveWell only review a small subset of highly regarded charities and do in-depth research into their effectiveness. You can find their highest rated charities here. One that stood out to me from this list is Malaria Consortium. The data provided by GiveWell shows them to be an incredibly cost-effective charity in terms of lives saved per dollar spent.
Where did the money go?
In Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria kills over 600,000 people annually. Over 50% of these deaths are children under the age of 5. There are a number of programs that Malaria Consortium work on but the one I'm focusing on is the seasonal malaria chemoprevention program (SMC). They provide SMC, which is a preventive medicine that can save children’s lives, during the four months of the year when malaria infection rates are especially high. It is estimated that for every $7 spent, Malaria Consortium can protect a child from malaria throughout the high transmission seasons. In a more fuller analysis, it is estimated that the average cost-effectiveness is $5,000 per life saved. There is plenty more data in the report here.
Amount Given
