Who are FoodCycle?
FoodCycle are a local, UK-based food charity. Their main aims are to feed the hungry and fight loneliness by hosting community meals each week.
This week, for example, there are 74 meals happening across the country that are completely free to attend. 87% of guests said FoodCycle makes them feel like they're part of a community, 86% say they're happier because of it, and 90% said they felt well-fed.
What do they do?
Where food banks often provide food to take home and cook yourself, FoodCycle tries to bring people together to eat. They consider themselves as much a mental health charity as a food charity (and actually offer check-ins and chats outside of meal times when people need company outside of the meal times).
They also cook their meals mostly from supermarket and local grocery surplus. Essential dried goods are bought, but everything else is made from food that would have otherwise been thrown away. They're committed to sustainable food practices, and in 2022, they saved over 200 tonnes of food from going to waste.
